The Michel Bernstein Collection of Senshu University, which was acquired to commemorate the Universityfs hundredth-year anniversary, is a grand catalogue including more than forty thousand historical documents relevant to the French Revolution. Michel Bernstein-Rolin (1906-2003) was well known as a dealer of antiquarian books as well as a bibliographer.
This collection is composed of documents printed or handwritten during the time of the Revolution. The printed documents include periodicals such as journals and annual reports, minutes of various assemblies, legal documents, pamphlets, posters, and related references collected by M. Bernstein himself. Hand-written manuscripts and other related documents numbers as many as 3,900. Accordingly, the Collection is considered to be the most important among those collected in the 20th century in relation to the French Revolution.
Since we housed the Collection, we have added more documents printed in various countries relevant to the French Revolution, and we are pleased that the Collection has been used by many researchers in and outside Japan.
